The State government on Wednesday evening announced the shutting of all shops barring milk and medical stores in Ahmedabad from Thursday. This sudden and monstrous decision set off panic among Amdavadis and chaos reigned across the city with just a couple of hours left to shop the essentials.

Announcing the decision, Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Gupta, who has been appointed to oversee the Covid-19 situation in Ahmedabad after the huge spike in cases, said that “this will inconvenience people, but this decision was necessary and it was taken in the interest of the people”.

Within minutes of the announcement, people rushed to vegetable and grocery stores across the city. There was madness all around as long queues were found everywhere with social distancing thrown to the wind. Police had to shut shops and disperse crowds at a number of places.

From 6 am on May 7 until May 15, barring milk and medical stores, all other shops will remain closed. Banks in Red Zone have also been directed to remain shut during this period, while ATMs will function as usual.

With Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra under home quarantine for 14 days after he came into contact with two positive patients, the first Covid-19 meeting under in-charge municipal commissioner Mukesh Kumar was held at Riverfront House at 12 noon on Tuesday. The meeting attended by Chief Secretary Anil Mukim, K Kailashnathan, chief principal secretary in the CM’s office and Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Gupta was to decide on the strategy and the measures to be taken in the next few days.

Following detailed deliberations a number of decisions were taken. It was found that super spreaders like those working in shops selling vegetables, groceries, fruits and in provision stores, super markets and icecream parlours, besides people engaged in home delivery of these items had become potent sources of infection. So, in the entire AMC area, all shops and home delivery, except milk and medicine shops will remain closed for next seven days starting from 6 am on Thursday.
