Single-day high: Booze worth Rs 231 crore sold in Karnataka

BENGALURU: Karnataka set a new single-day record on Wednesday when liquor worth Rs 231 crore was sold across the state after the lockdown relaxations kicked in.
On Tuesday, the state broke the previous record of Rs 170 crore on December 28, 2019 when liquor worth Rs 197 crore was bought.
On the first two days, Monday and Tuesday, liquor worth Rs 45 crore and Rs 197 crore was sold.
On Wednesday, shops sold 39 lakh litres of Indian Made Liquor (IML) worth Rs 216 crore and 7 lakh litres of beer worth Rs 15.6 crore,'' a state excise official said here.
On Day 1,8.5 lakh litres of IML and 3.9 lakh litres of beer for a combined value of Rs 45 crore were sold after 40 days of lockdown. As per revised guidelines, liquor shops are allowed to do business from 9am to 7pm daily till May 17 when the extended lockdown is scheduled to end.
Responding to criticism about lack of preparation for sale of liquor , Yediyurappa quipped: "When there are people to drink, what preparation is needed?"
