The death count in India due to COVID-19 has risen to 1,694 with 126 deaths in last 24 hours while the number of cases have reached to 49,391 on Wednesday. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said "fighting coronavirus is no rocket science" and the nation may remember the pandemic as a "blessing in disguise" if people imbibe good hygiene practices.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a meeting of a taskforce on the coronavirus vaccine development, drug discovery, diagnosis and testing and reviewed India''s efforts in the fight against COVID-19. India has also embarked on a "massive" operation calling up passenger jets and naval ships to bring back some of the hundreds of thousands of its nationals stuck abroad. Evacuees will have to pay for their passage and spend 14 days in quarantine on arrival.

Meanwhile, Telangana has said it will continue the lockdown in the state to contain the coronavirus outbreak till May 29 -- ten days after it is scheduled to end in the rest of the country.

"People want lockdown extended. I have informed the Prime Minister about our decision," said Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao after a 7- hour cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening.

The novel coronavirus has killed at least 2,54,532 people since the outbreak first emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by news agency AFP today. More than 3,629,160 cases were registered in 195 countries and territories.

Coronavirus India Lockdown: Section 144 Imposed In Ghaziabad Till May 31
Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) will continue to be imposed in Ghaziabad district till May 31, according to District Magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey.

According to a directive issued by the District Magistrate's office, the period for which Section 144 has been imposed can be altered in the coming days keeping into mind the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

"Section 144 CrPC to remain imposed in Ghaziabad district till May 31, 2020. This period can be reduced or cancelled as per the situation," a letter by the DM, roughly translated to English from Hindi, read.

The rest of the restrictions will stay in place as per the earlier orders, news agency ANI reported.

600 Jammu And Kashmir Residents Have Reached Srinagar, More On Way: District Magistrate
Shahid Choudhary, Srinagar District Magistrate and Development Commissioner on Wednesday said that over 600 people who were stranded in other states have reached Srinagar.

"More than 600 residents arrived back this Sehri. Certainly lot of hardships to be back home. Thankful to all the colleagues for the night out to keep them comfortable. More on way," Mr Choudhary tweeted.

On May 5, Rohit Kansal, spokesperson of Jammu and Kashmir, had tweeted: "28,000 J&K residents return. 48 from Jodhpur returning tomorrow to Srinagar. Plans final for return of students from Dhaka. US coronavirus deaths rise by 2,333 in 24 hours: Report

The US coronavirus death toll climbed by 2,333 in the past 24 hours, a tally by Johns Hopkins University showed Tuesday, more than twice as many as the day before. 

The Baltimore-based university said as of 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Wednesday) that the country had suffered a total of 71,022 deaths.

India to evacuate Indians stuck abroad from tomorrow

Hundreds of thousands of Indians stranded abroad because of the coronavirus crisis will be brought back by air and by sea from Thursday in the world's largest evacuation mission. More than 3 lakh Indians have requested a flight home.

Over 14,800 Indians in 13 countries will be brought back by 64 flights in the first week, says the foreign ministry.
