A mother-of-three was beaten to death by her former partner after calling police three times in one night days before she was killed.

Lorenzo Deegan, 29, punched the victim, 29, in the torso breaking her rib and piercing her spleen in the early hours of June 18 in Katherine, Northern Territory, last year.

The Darwin Supreme Court heard on Tuesday that Deegan left her to slowly bleed to death over several hours on the floor of his home.

Deegan phoned his mother when the victim was unresponsive, who called triple-zero at 8.30am.

The court also heard the victim had phoned police three times on June 13 when Deegan came to her house in Katherine.

One officer arrived and spoke to her, but she continued calling throughout the night and said: 'This bloke keeps coming around called Lorenzo Deegan,' the NT News reported.

Crown Prosecutor Matt Nathan said the victim endured years of physical and emotional abuse throughout their tumultuous relationship.

Deegan spent two of those years behind bars for viciously assaulting an elderly man he was staying with.

He started assaulting his former partner after he was released on suspended sentence, while wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Mr Nathan noted her injuries meant would not have lost consciousness quickly.

'It would have caused significant pain and distress, and the accused during that period of time did nothing to assist the complainant,' he said.

If Deegan had called emergency services, she likely would have survived.

He pleaded guilty to one count of negligent manslaughter and four counts of assault.
