Chennai: Tanker runs over woman cop, 22, on Marina stretch

CHENNAI: A 22-year-old constable died on Tuesday afternoon when she was run over by a tanker on Kamarajar Salai. The truck driver was arrested.
S Pavithra of Tenkasi district was part of the Armed Reserve wing in Pudupet. Pavithra was on question paper guard duty at Santhome.
On Tuesday, she went to her friend's house for lunch and was returning to duty on her scooter when the accident took place around 2.30pm.
She turned right from Bharathi Salai to Kamarajar Salai when a speeding tanker carrying oil knocked her down from behind and ran over her, killing her on the spot.
The truck was carrying palm oil from a factory in Medavakkam and going towards Tondiarpet, said police.
A few passersby informed police.
The Anna Square traffic investigation police rushed to the spot and sent her to Omandurar Government Hospital. She had sustained severe injuries on the head and was declared brought dead.
Her body has been sent for postmortem.
"The truck driver was speeding on the stretch. He failed to notice her taking right turn and hit her," said an investigating officer.
A case of causing death due to negligence and speeding was registered against the truck driver B Rajasekar, 24, of Tondiarpet.
Further investigation is on, police said.
