CHANDIGARH: Hours ahead of Haryana cabinet meeting on Tuesday to decide on opening of liquor vends in the state, an alleged scam of huge quantity of Indian Make Foreign Liquor (IMFL) going missing from the main godown situated in Sonipat district came to light.
The missing liquor is said to be worth several lakhs of rupees, and roles of excise officials and present and former SHO of Kharkhoda police station have come under the scanner. The police have registered a case at Kharkhoda police station.
Sources said present SHO of Kharkhoda and his immediate predecessor have been sent to lines. Acting on the directions of Haryana home minister Anil Vij, SP Jashandeep Randhawa started the investigations and the proceedings for suspension of two SHOs.
“We shall get this probed by the special investigation team (SIT) in the supervision of SP Sonipat. Preliminary investigations hint out towards serious lapse on the part of SHOs and few subordinates. Besides, involvement of officials of other departments and locals cannot be ruled out. The case is registered. Now, we shall first fix the responsibility on the basis of preliminary investigations,” ADGP Sandeep Khirwar, who heads the Rohtak police range, confirmed.
He added that it was is too early to quantify the missing stock and its value. “Let SIT start work and procure the documents related to stocks. Only then we can officially reach some conclusion,” added Khirwar.
As illicit liquor had a free flow in the state during the period of lockdown, acting on the tip-off in some districts some district excise and taxation collectors had conducted surprise checks on the godown.
Deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala had on Sunday hinted at possible mismatch in inventory during the raids conducted on all 47 godowns across the state.
