‘Three schemes insufficient for job creation, govt needs to do more’

Ranchi: The state government’s three new schemes for employment of migrant workers returning to the rural pockets will not be enough for their livelihood and revival of rural economy, various groups said on Tuesday.
While BJP’s Jharkhand president Deepak Prakash stressed that the Hemant Soren government must provide skill-based employment opportunities to returning workers, civil rights forums have advocated the need to roll out several schemes under MGNREGA and revised the daily wages to tide over the impending crisis.
Talking to the TOI on Tuesday, Prakash said, “Will a worker, who is employed with the manufacturing sector in places like Gujarat, be interested in building check dams under Nilamber-Pitamber Jal Samriddhi Yojana? The government has to employ them based on their skill sets and create employment opportunities.”
In his tweet on Tuesday, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Mahesh Poddar also advocated waivers for the state’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Claiming that MSMEs employ 60% of India’s total workforce, Poddar urged the Centre and the state government to provide aid to the workers for survival. In another tweet, he scoffed at the three new schemes and said, “The system is expert in preparing schemes. Check dams, ponds, well and lift irrigation were built before, too, and crores of rupees were spent. The result is there for all to see. Now, they are giving the same projects. What is the guarantee that they won’t fail?”
On Sunday, former CM Babulal Marandi had written to chief minister Hemant Soren, urging him to set up new MSME units in places like Koderma, Giridih, Palamu and Garhwa, where lakhs of migrant workers are expected to return.
Jharkhand NREGA Watch on Tuesday wrote to the joint secretary of the Union government and chief secretary of Jharkhand government seeking more stress on MNREGA. In its two page letter, the forum advocated for rolling out new schemes, revising daily wages, setting up of call centres at village levels to simplify the process of seeking jobs, getting project sanctions and disbursement of wages.
“Keeping the Covid-19 pandemic in mind, the man-days should be increased over 100 days,” the forum said.
