Six injured in Budgam grenade attack

Coordinated efforts against militants intensified, says DGP

Two security personnel and four civilians were injured in a grenade attack in central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Tuesday.

An official said militants lobbed a grenade towards the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel manning the Pakherpora market.

A policeman and a CRPF jawan were among the injured, police officials said. One woman was also among the injured civilians. “The injured were shifted to hospitals,” the official said.

None of the injured sustained serious injuries, the official added.

Arrest in Doda

Meanwhile, security forces arrested a youth along with arms and ammunition in the Chenab Valley’s Doda district.

The police said the arrested youth, Tanvir Ahmed, a resident of the Tantana Gundha area of Doda, had been missing since February. “He is being questioned,” said the police.

Anti-terror operations

Jammu & Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh said coordinated efforts by security forces have restricted terrorist activities and action against terrorism has been intensified.

“Pakistan, over the years, is continuously attempting to foment trouble in J&K by pushing terrorists, repeatedly committing ceasefire violations and instigating and promoting violence by various means. We have to continue our coordinated efforts against terrorists and their associates to ensure peaceful atmosphere for the people of Jammu & Kashmir,” Mr. Singh said.

He said anti-terror operations will be intensified further across Kashmir till a lasting peace is established.

Chairing a meeting in Srinagar, the DGP called for “proper briefing be given to the personnel deployed on ground as terrorists are attempting to take advantage of present situation to disrupt peace and order in parts of Jammu and Kashmir and targeting security forces’ deployments”.

‘Extra alert’

“The officers should remain alert and extra cautious in their respective jurisdictions and ensure that elements inimical to peace are not given any chance to disturb peace,” he added.

Earlier, the DGP paid floral tribute to the three CRPF personnel who died in a militant attack in Handwara on Monday.

“In the Handwara attack, terrorists took undue advantage of civilian movement in the adjoining orchard and fired at CRPF personnel without caring about civilians behind whom they were taking shelter, leading to loss of life of an innocent civilian," DGP Singh said.

Civilian laid to rest

The 14-year-old boy, who died during the Handwara shootout, was laid to rest on Tuesday morning in the graveyard at the Sheri area of Baramulla, where non-local militants are usually buried.

Seventeen members of the family were allowed to participate in the last rites.
