NAVI MUMBAI: More and more migrant workers are seen walking towards their villages in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh among other states, despite the latest government initiative of sending the migrants home by special Shramik trains.
At the Sion-Panvel road at Vashi on Wednesday evening, a group of daily wage workers were seen walking towards Karnataka, beyond Sholapur.
When TOI asked them why they are not trying to go by a Shramik train after filling the inter-state travel form, one of the workers said: "The procedure is too lengthy and we do not even have Rs 200 to pay for medical certificates. It is better to walk, after sitting in Mumbai doing nothing for last 40 days." A woman worker in the group who was carrying a big bag and a child, while her older daughter walked ahead carrying a water bottle, commented: "If we somehow get a lift in a vegetable tempo to go to Karnataka, it will be nice. Otherwise, we will have to walk."
A little ahead, there was another group of migrant workers walking towards Madhya Pradesh. They also remarked that they can't afford undergoing medical test to get the certificate, which is required to go by special trains officially.
Ever since Lockdown 3.0 began, many migrant workers have been noticed in such a situation, attempting to walk back home.
