There has been a spike in Covid-19 cases in Hoshiarpur, but most of these have been due to pilgrims and workers who returned from Nanded, Mahrashtra, testing positive.
The case of the deceased, who was a vegetable vendor, is the second such in the district where source of infection is not known. In rest of the cases, sources were known and further contact tracing led to containing of infection.
Hoshiarpur civil surgeon Dr Jasbir Singh said the deceased was a tuberculosis patient and he was brought to them on April 1and was referred to Amritsar. “He was shifted there on April 2. On April 4 evening, he died shortly after he tested positive. We have traced his contacts and 166 samples have been taken. The area where he lived, Kirti Nagar, has also been sealed,” he said.
He added the source of his infection was not known and it was the second such case in the district in the last few days.
It is learnt that not only the decesed, but other members of his family were also working as vegetable vendors. The area where he lived has quite a few vegetable vendors. Sources in the health department revealed that they suspected that somebody else in his family contracted the infection and as Ramesh was immunocompromised, he showed symptoms and succumbed to the infection.
Source of infection is not known in another case which has also been recently detected and reported with symptoms. “That patient is stable,” said the civil surgeon.
