Gaur walks streets of Mangaluru, dies later

MANGALURU: Residents of Mannagudda in Mangaluru had a gaur, also called the Indian bison, in their midst on Tuesday.
The animal cantered across majestically in the heart of the coastal city and soon became a talking point.
The lone gaur criss-crossed the residential and commercial hub before a Pilikula Biological Park official tranquillized it around 11am. The animal, however, died later in the day.
Officials said it is common for herbivores, which are sedated to ensure their safe capture, to suffer cardiac arrest.
PBP personnel also tranquillized a leopard trapped in a snare at Kuthethur, on the outskirts.
“We laid a cage for the leopard after receiving reports of its presence in the area,” said district forest officer V Karikalan. Both the animals were released in Charmadi reserve forest, but the gaur did not survive.
