Dongri police fed 942 migrants for a month, helped them return to Andhra Pradesh

Migrants wait to board the train from Kalyan to Guntur in Andhra
MUMBAI: Emotions ran high in Dongri’s Dana Bunder area on Tuesday as 942 natives of Andhra Pradesh boarded 35 buses to return home via Kalyan in a Shramik special train, thanks to the efforts of the local police. This is the first biggest batch of migrants from south Mumbai leaving for their home states.
With no work and their savings depleting fast, the workers who either lived or worked in Dongri were provided meals by the police and BMC during the lockdown period. Accommodation arrangements were also made for those who had no place to stay. “We took help from the BMC and NGOs to provide them meals for one month. Now, they are going home,” said zonal DCP Sangramsingh Nishandar.
The police also helped the labourers prepare their travel documents and guided them on how to get their medical certificates. Once all documents were scrutinized and sanctioned, police and BMC arranged 35 buses to ferry them to Kalyan station. From there, they were to leave in a train for Guntakal junction on Tuesday night. They are all from one district.
“I am happy that I am going home. The people here kept good care of us and we are thankful to them,” one of the daily wagers told TOI as he boarded the bus near the Easter n Freeway.
So far, 10,000 migrant workers have left from Maharashtra in trains for their home states, while 35,000 others have applied for permission.
