BHUBANESWAR: A 77-year-old
Covid-19 positive man from the city died raising the number of Covid deaths in the state to two. Nine more persons — five returned from Surat and four from West Bengal—tested positive for the virus increasing the number of infected persons to 185.
A health department update said the deceased was a native of Madhusudan Nagar area of the city. He had underlying co-morbidities of hypertension, diabetes and kidney disease. He had tested positive for the virus on April 29. Earlier, his son, wife, daughter-in-law had tested positive for the virus. Notably, a 72-year-old man from Jharpada area of the city had died becoming Odisha’s first Covid death on April 6.
Jagatsinghpur joined the list of affected districts reporting four positive cases—men aged 26, 30, 32 and 47 who recently returned from Surat. The others include two men from Jajpur aged 57 and 65 years and one each Kendrapada (60M), Balasore (48M) and Ganjam (18M). The youth from Ganjam also returned from Surat while the others returned from West Bengal, the information and public relations department revealed in a series of tweets.
Positive cases being reported from among the workers who recently returned from various states is a cause of worry because lakhs of people were returning by trains and buses.
So far 35,540 Odias have returned to the state since May 3 by train, bus and other vehicles, a government statement said. More than 7450 Odia people returned on Wednesday alone. Given that more than 10 lakh people have registered with the government portal, the number of may swell fast in the coming days.
The government statement said about 12,000 temporary medical camps have been readied in 6798 gram panchayats of the state. In all these Centres, around five lakh beds have been arranged to provide COVID-19 health services in rural areas. The returnees were being accommodated for 14 days quarantine in such facilities. In urban areas home quarantine is also being allowed to the returnees.
Of the 185 positive cases in cases, 61 have recovered while 122 are active cases. Currently, 234 persons are in hospital isolation.
