The Hyderabad-based Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) has synthesized the major starting material (KSM) for remediation. This is the first step towards developing an active pharmaceutical component. IICT has also launched technology demonstrations for pharmaceutical manufacturers like Cipla to start manufacturing in India when needed.

Remedisvir is produced by Gilead Sciences. It has received emergency permission to treat Kovid-19 in the US based on clinical data. Gilead Sciences has a patent on the drug, but patent law allows the drug to be developed only for research purposes and not for commercial manufacture.

Results of clinical trials in the United States show that when given Remedisvir to infected patients, it cured an average of 11 days, while it took 15 days to recover from other medications. India is part of the World Health Organization's Solidarity Trial for the treatment of Kovid-19 and has received 1000 doses of the drug for testing.

Harshvardhan said in a statement on Monday that the synthesis of KSM has been achieved by IICT and technology demonstrations are taking place for the Indian industry. It is another promising drug for the treatment of Kovid-19 after favipiravir (flu medicine). CSIR is working closely with the private sector for clinical trials and potential launches in India.

Remedisvir has three KMS - Pyrol, Furon, and Phosphate. Dr. Srivari Chandrasekhar, Director of IICT, said that the synthesis of KSM is an important stage in drug development. He said, 'Synthesis of KSM is the first step to develop an active pharmaceutical component for any drug. These major starting materials for remedies are available in India and chemical companies can manufacture them. Other reagents (regents) can be taken from other countries. We started working for Remedisvir's KSM when the trials started in China in late January.
