The Delhi government has said it will charge a "special corona fee" on the sale of liquor from Tuesday, the day after the liquor shops opened in the national capital after more than a month.
Since Monday morning hundreds of people had lined up outside standalone shops, but people did not follow social distancing at all and then the police had to resort to lathi-charge.
The third phase of the lockdown began on Monday and some concessions were made. This phase will continue until 17 May. Opening liquor shops was one of them.
Let's know about the special corona fee.
* As per the latest lockdown exemption granted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), about 150 government liquor shops in Delhi have been allowed to open from 9 am to 6.30 pm.
* Delhi Government's Finance Department issued the order late on Monday night.
"As per the order of the Finance Department signed by the Deputy Secretary," on liquor sold through retail licensees for the consumption of the premises, you will have to pay 70 percent in addition to the maximum retail price.
* "This will be 70% of MRP (maximum retail price). The new rates will be implemented from Tuesday morning.
* So if the price of a bottle of pre-tax MRP is Rs 1000, then now you have to pay Rs 1700.
* Officials have said that a "special corona tax" will help increase revenue, which has been badly hit by the Kovid-19 lockdown.
* Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said that the government is finding it difficult to pay salaries due to revenue loss of Rs 3200 crore in April as compared to last year.
* This may be one of the ways Delhi government can earn more revenue from liquor sales with lockdown business and tax collection.
