CHENNAI: DMK president
M K Stalin on Tuesday said it will not be possible to curb the spread of Covid-19 in
North Chennai unless some people are shifted to a less populated place temporarily.
“In North Chennai, the population density is very high. Unless people are shifted to another place temporarily, it will not be possible to prevent the spread of
coronavirus,” said Stalin.
There were 855 Covid-19 cases in North Chennai as on Tuesday morning.
“What was govt doing?”Stalin asked what the Tamil Nadu government was doing when several retail and wholesale traders were doing business at Koyambedu market in Chennai without social distancing. Koyambedu market has become one of the largest Covid-19 clusters in the state.
“On March 24, as the government announced the lockdown, there was historic crowd at Koyembedu bus terminus, Tambaram and Perungalathur (who wanted to return to their native places). On April 25, thousands of people came to the Koyambedu market (when the government announced a lockdown in lockdown). The government could have prevented all these. People cannot be blamed,” said Stalin.
He criticised the government for its decision to reopen Tasmac liquor shops. “If the liquor shops are opened, what is the meaning of a lockdown," asked Stalin.
Increasing number of casesStalin said, “There are doubts that the new cases are known now because only now tests are being done. Is the number of cases in Tamil Nadu increasing as coronavirus is spreading fast? Or is it because only now the government is testing more people,” asked Stalin.
He said the government should take steps to prevent the spread of the virus. He demanded that the government take steps to test more people.
He wanted the government to reveal details about the number of people who are tested in each district and the number of positive cases there.
