Even as special trains ferry migrant workers to their home towns, those still stranded clashed with police in Surat, Gujarat on Monday.
Violence erupted in Kadodara area of Surat after hundreds of migrant workers came out on roads as they demanded that they be sent back to their native places after being stranded for over 40 days in the lockdown.
The migrants clashed with police and damaged several vehicles on Surat streets. Police used teargas shelling to disperse the migrant workers.
Last week, hundreds of migrant workers had come out on roads and vandalised the office of an under-construction building and vehicles in Surat district.
In another incident on the same day, a policeman was injured after some locals allegedly threw stones at security personnel who were trying to enforce lockdown in Dindoli area of Surat city.
Five persons were later detained for the attack on the policemen.
