Lockdown in Chandigarh: Cops seize 6,558 vehicles, collect Rs 48 lakh fine

The police department has extended the time to pay fines by one month
CHANDIGARH: The UT police seized 6,558 vehicles of people violating the lockdown without valid reasons during March 23-May 2 and Rs 48 lakh was collected in penalties.
According to the traffic police data, 3,486 two-wheelers and 998 four-wheelers were seized from different parts of the city during the period. Besides, 2,074 other vehicles like auto-rickshaws, tempos, mini-trucks and trucks were also impounded.
The cops said most of the curfew violators were also found driving without valid driving licences and vehicle insurance papers.
According to the new Motor Vehicle Act, anyone found driving without a valid driving licence, registration certificate or insurance has to pay a fine of Rs 12,000, and Rs 2,500 for curfew violation and towing charges. But, if the driver is able to produce the documents, he/she has to pay only Rs 2,500.
The data shows maximum 944 vehicles were impounded from the city’s east sub-division, 849 from south sub-division and 207 vehicles were seized from the central sub-division between April 23 and May 2.
According to the available data, as many as 9,596 vehicles were impounded by the traffic police from different parts of the city during January 1-May 2 period.
Traffic DSP Kewal Krishan said the number of challans has gone down significantly as traffic flow is less, but the number of impounded vehicles has gone up.
The traffic police said they are not setting up check-posts for routine traffic violations like red light jumping, using phone while driving, etc., and their focus is only on curfew violators. They have also been issuing challans through CCTVs installed at various traffic junctions in the city.
To maintain physical distancing and avoid heavy rush at the challaning branch, the traffic police release vehicles after four days from the date of impounding. Earlier, violators could get their vehicles released the next day after paying fines.
The police department has also extended by one month the time to pay fines for vehicles challaned before March 19. Earlier, the department had given them time of two-month deadline, which will expire on May 19.
