In the cash market, the Nifty 50 index slumped 566.40 points or 5.74% and closed at 9,293.50.
The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market's expectation of volatility over the near term, jumped 28.7% to 43.74.
On the options front, the Nifty option chain for 28 May 2020 expiry showed maximum call open interest (OI) of 11.64 lakh at the 10,000 strike price. Maximum put OI of 23.84 lakh contracts was seen at 9,000 strike price.
Reliance Industries (RIL), Bharti Airtel and Hindustan Unilever were the top traded individual stock futures contracts in F&O segment of NSE. RIL May 2020 futures were at 1,439.85, compared with spot closing price of 1435. Bharti Airtel May 2020 futures were at 532.60 compared with spot closing price of 530.95. Hindustan Unilever May 2020 futures were at 2,094, compared with spot closing price of 2087.05.
The F&O contracts for May will expire on 28 May 2020.
