Flypasts, showering petals: How armed forces thanked warriors

GUWAHATI/ITANAGAR: From Assam to Arunachal Pradesh, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Sunday carried out flypasts over major cities and towns as helicopters showered petals on hospitals to express gratitude to healthcare professionals, who are at the forefront of India’s battle against the novel coronavirus.
In Guwahati, three Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft carried out fly-pasts over the state legislative assembly, while IAF helicopters showered flower petals over city hospitals — Guwahati Medical College and Hospital and Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital. Besides these, the Air Force Band also played mesmerizing tunes for all Covid warriors.
“All doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and other frontline workers witnessed today’s (Sunday) display. Such acts help boost their morale instil confidence amongst them,” defence PRO Lt Col P Khongsai said.
In other parts of the state, too, the Army paid tributes to police personnel working tirelessly to enforce the lockdown. They laid wreaths for the martyrs and also honoured many Covid warriors, the defence PRO added.
In Arunachal Pradesh, two Advance Light Helicopters of the IAF showered flower petals over the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, the only Covid-19 hospital in the state. Thousands of onlookers witnessed the spectacle from their rooftops.
“The exercise is to display gratitude to those fighting the virus, including doctors, nurses and paramedics. It also aims to send the message that the nation stands united in the fight against the virus,” the spokesperson of the Tezpur Air base said on Sunday.
Governor Brig (Retd) Dr B DMishra commended the gesture of the Indian Armed Forces and hoped that the message reaches each and every frontline worker, police personnel, administrators, gaon burhas (village headmen) and NGOs.
“This is a true recognition of the committed services that we are rendering at the cost of our lives. We have taken oaths to save lives of others irrespective of what the situation is. This salutation will energise us to work with more dedication,” Dr Moji Jini, TRIHMS director, said.
