NAVI MUMBAI: Twenty-five migrant families, including 22 children, walked over 200km covering forests, hills and tunnels from Wai taluka in Satara district to reach Dahiwad village in Mahad, Raigad district.
Their three-day trek through inaccessible areas in Mahabaleshwar (Satara) and Bhor (Pune) ended on April 27, when a Raigad police team intercepted them at Mazeri in Mahad, a few kilometres, ahead of their village. They are now in home quarantine.
“The 25 families, comprising 114 men, women and children, are migrant workers who had gone to Wai in January to help pluck tamarind. After the lockdown, they were forced to stay back. But as their money ran out, they decided to walk back home,” said Dahiwad sarpanch Jayram Jadhav.
Mahad tahsildar Chandrasen Pawar said: “They have been put in home quarantine after medical check-ups. They have been provided wheat and rice under the public distribution system, while Swades Foundation has provided them other essentials like cooking oil.”
