THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The
Chalai market will be operational from Monday. The decision came following a meeting between city police and traders over measures to ensure social distancing.
Traders held a meeting with city police commissioner Balram Kumar Upadhyay, where it was decided to have only three entries and two exits for Chalai market. The three entry points will be via Killipalam junction, Powerhouse road - Sabhavati kovil street and Killippalam-Attakulangara bypass road - Kothuval street. People can park their vehicles at power house, Attakulangara-by pass road.
Exit will be through Kothuval street and Chalai main road near Gandhi Park. All remaining roads will be closed. Traders and customers will have to park their vehicles outside the market. Vehicles will be allowed to carry purchased goods only if it is too heavy to be carried in hand. However, bills of purchased good and other documents should be shown at the entry. The meeting decided to introduce temporary control measures. Further decisions will be made after reviewing the functioning of the market on the first day.
Private vehicles will not be allowed to enter through Killipalam - Aryasala road. Thermal scanners will be used to detect body temperature and entry will be allowed only after scanning. All goods vehicles will have to exit via Kareems-East fort road. The shopkeepers have been asked to introduce additional counters, token system or cordon off space to ensure social distancing. The commissioner said violations will call for strict action.
Kerala Vyapari Vyavasai Ekopana Samiti district vicepresident Aryasala Suresh, state vice-president V Pappachan and Chalai ward councilor S K P Ramesh attended the meeting. KVVES district president K S Radhakrishnan urged traders and public to strictly follow the instructions of police and health workers.
The traders and police were on marathon meetings for the past few days after the latter closed down shops in the market even after relaxation of restrictions. Police had informed traders that allowing shops in a crowded place like market was not practical. Now, police have given strict instruction to maintain social distancing. There are also restrictions on the number of staff who are allowed to work in a single shop. Malls were still not allowed to function.
