THANE: Seventeen fresh Covid-positive cases reported from Thane on Sunday took the total tally to 389. Also, a 52-year-old from Mumbra who had diabetes died, taking the death toll to 16.
Civic data reveals that the number of cases in Lokmanya Nagar shot up to 80 on Sunday which was barely 14 on April 20. A similar spike was seen in Wagle ward where numbers rose from 10 to 68 in the same period.
Due to the rise in numbers in the densely populated areas, the administration has started mass testing and hastened the process of identifying high-risk contacts and isolating them.
“Community transmission risk in such areas is high due to common water taps and toilet blocks,” said corporator Hanumant Jagdale.
Dr Ram Kendre, in charge for corona cases in Thane, said they have collected about 100 samples randomly in Wagle Estate area and tested 18 of which 10 were positive. “Besides samples of suspected patients, we are doing random sample collection,” he said.
Meanwhile, the TMC has started a contest for residents to upload suggestions on safety and hygiene measures to be followed amid lockdown.
