According to reports, two more aftershocks followed in the same general area as the original point of the main earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 and 4.1. It was also reported residents of Iraklio, Crete’s major city located on the island’s north coast felt the first earthquake for several seconds. Some people also rushed to their balconies. The quake was also felt across the region of Lassithi and the city of Heraklion.
Greece is located in a highly seismically active area and experiences hundreds of quakes every year. Although Saturday’s quake was stronger than most of the others, it took place relatively far from populated areas. Therefore, no major damage or injuries have been reported so far.
Shortly before the earthquake hit Greece, it also struck regions of southern Puerto Rico with a magnitude of 5.5. US Geological Service reported that the quake in Puerto Rico hit just off the coast of towns including Guánica and Guayanilla. These were also the regions were the deadly earthquake took place in early January damaged hundreds of houses and caused millions of dollars in the disruption.
The earthquake on Saturday jolted people out of their beds but did not cause any major damage. However, local reports state that at least one second-story balcony crashed in the southern city of Ponce and cracks were reported in some houses of Guayanilla. Puerto Rico reported several other aftershocks and even a 4.9-magnitude tremor.
Shocks were also reported around few regions of Turkey. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the closest residential area to the region in Turkey was the Datca district of Mugla on the Aegean coast and no incident was reported from the area. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said there were reports the quake was felt in Egypt.
