Shack worker murdered in Calangute; 13 held

Calangute: The Calangute police, on Monday, informed that they have arrested thirteen persons in connection with the murder of Shamshad Khan Malik (30), a resident of Uttar Pradesh.

“Shamshad lost his life over a Rs 2,500 mobile phone after he was assaulted by a group of 15 to 17 drug addicts with iron pipes, iron rods and dandas. Head injuries resulted in his death at the Calangute market,” said the police.

This is the second case of murder involving drug addicts in the Calangute fish market.

The police informed that they have  registered offences early Monday morning following a complaint filed by Sumit Jaiswal (23), a resident of Delhi, working as a waiter in a shack.

The complainant in his complaint has stated that around 15 to 17 accused formed an unlawful assembly and assaulted him using iron pipes, dandas, and iron rods causing serious injuries on his head.”

“In the fight, the accused also assaulted my co-worker Shamshad Khan Malik, resulting in his death,” adds the complaint.

The police said that the motive behind the crime is that the deceased  had gone in search of the associate of the accused who had taken a cash of Rs 2,500 from him on the pretext of selling a mobile phone, which was never given.

Reliable sources at Calangute market told this daily that this is the second murder committed by drug addicts.

The sources further added that the deceased had bought a mobile phone from the accused, which was  not working  and as such he went to ask for the refund which was not returned to the deceased and instead was assaulted thereby causing his death.

Meanwhile SP North Utkristh Prasoon accompanied by SDPO Porvorim  Edwin Colaco  visited the scene of crime and interrogated the accused  apprehended in this case.

The SP North also gave directions to PI Calangute regarding further investigation in the case.

The state forensic science team also visited the scene of crime and assisted the local police for lifting valuable evidence in this case.

The police have so far arrested 13 accused in this case. Detailed scene of panchanama was drawn and the weapons of crime attached under panchanama.

The accused were produced for medical examination before police surgeon at GMC, Bambolim.

SP North informed that he will suitably reward the Calangute police team comprising PI Nolasco Raposo, PSI Vishal Mandrekar, police constables Vinay Shrivastav, Vinod Naik, Shasank Sakhalkar, and Rahul Ramnavar for detecting the murder case within no time. 

The accused persons will be produced before JMFC, Mapusa for seeking remand, said the police.

Further investigation is in progress  under the supervision of SP North  Utkrisht Prasoon and SDPO Porvorim  Edwin Colaco.
