Upcoming Jaguar XJ To Be “Stunning,” Question What Large Luxury Sedans Are All About

Jaguar Design Director Julian Thomson has revealed some new details about the next-generation XJ.

Speaking with Motor Trend, Thomson described the upcoming sedan as a “stunning car” that they are “very, very pleased with it.”

The designer was coy on specifics, but said the upcoming model questions the “values of what F-segment luxury sedans are about.” He added the XJ is a “very different product” that’s not a “traditional business sedan.” Instead, it has a unique profile and is focused on “serenity, calm, and warmth.”

As Jaguar’s new flagship, the XJ will incorporate styling cues which will eventually trickle down to the rest of the lineup. There’s no word on specifics, but Thomson suggested future models will be “lovingly honed to perfection.”

While he wouldn’t go into details, the designer did suggest the XJ will have a “stronger” and more distinctive front fascia. He also hinted that future sedans will have a handful of “consistent” styling cues.

Spy photographers have caught the redesigned XJ on multiple occasions and it features a prominent grille that is flanked by slender headlights. We can also expect a rakish windscreen, a steeply sloping roof and streamlined bodywork. There will also be flush-mounted door handles, a sportier greenhouse and a massive trunk.

The XJ is slated to be unveiled later this year, but the coronavirus could thrown a wrench into those plans. Thomson wouldn’t say either way, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Regardless, Thomson suggested Jaguar is working on an evolution of their design language. He said the main goal is making upcoming models “more special, more different, more beautiful, [and] more exotic.”
