Residents fall prey to online swindlers in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: Five city residents were duped of around Rs 30,000 while purchasing grocery items online last month. All the five complainants have filed written complaints at the SSP public window and the cyber cell of the UT police.
In her complaint to the cyber cell, Neha Kakkar, a resident of Sector 22, said she had ordered grocery items online from Sham Provision Store in Sector 22 and paid Rs 850 through Paytm on April 17. Later, she received a message regarding deduction of Rs 9,500 from her Google pay account.
Alka Chopra, a resident of Sector 23, said she called up at the customer care number of Big Bazaar for purchasing grocery items on April 14. She got the number from Google. The person who picked her call gave her another number to place the order. She called on the other number and gave details of essential items she needed. She was then given a Paytm number and she paid Rs 3,900 for her order, but the groceries were not delivered at her home. She later realised that she was cheated by online swindlers.
Another resident Ishwar Chander of Sector 22 reported to the police that he had placed online order for purchase of grocery items with Sham Provision Store and allegedly paid Rs 10,000. However, he did not receive groceries and later found that he was cheated by an unknown person. The owner of the provision store said he did not get any online order. Ishwar Chander made a complaint to the cyber cell against unknown persons.
While talking to TOI, officials of the cyber cell said most of the persons were cheated when they called on the numbers displayed on Google and their calls got conncted to the mobile numbers of online cheaters.
