CHANDIGARH: The desperation to lighten their mood by some hard drinks during the lockdown has cost as many as 20 people Rs 1 lakh in liquor-atdoorstep frauds in two weeks, according to the cyber cell of the police department.
Sanjeev Kumar of Sector 39 was one of the victims. He said he saw an advertisement on Facebook about home delivery of liquor from a Sector 22-based shop. He called up the number and sought a box of whisky. The deal was finalised at Rs 4,600. The fraudster asked for payment in advance through Google Pay. Kumar readily obliged, awaiting his consignment. However, he received a call asking him to pay Rs 20 more as GST bill from his debit card. He shared the details of his card and the OTP number with the fraudster over phone. Later, the accused allegedly deducted Rs 20, Rs 4,071 and Rs 15,074 from his account. The accused promised him that he would return his money, but later allegedly withdrew Rs 9,800 more from his account.
Sahil of Sector 22, said he saw a message on his WhatsApp regarding home delivery of liquor. He asked for two boxes of whisky. The deal was finalised at Rs 8,000. Later, a “delivery boy” asked Sahil to transfer Rs 4,000 as advance money. After waiting for many hours, when liquor boxes were not delivered, he called up the number again. The fraudster told him that his order was cancelled and for Rs 4,000 refund, he will have to click on a link and fill in his bank details, which was sent by him on his mobile. However, Sahil realised he was duped.
