Bihar: 'Despite vulnerability, Gaya has managed Covid-19 situation commendably well'

GAYA: On account of its profile as an international tourist place with a high foreigner footfall including the visitors from mainland China, Gaya must have been the most attractive destination for the deadly virus in the Bihar-Jharkhand region. But with just six positive cases, five of them on the ‘recovered list’ the place has so far done commendably well.
In retrospect, the vulnerability has come as a boon as preventive measures were taken much earlier in Gaya as compared to other parts of the state, says district magistrate Abhishek Singh. Nothing can be said with certainty at this stage but right from the beginning we have been planning things and taking preemptive measures, said the DM.
As the thermal scanning of international passengers and their profiling started early, word spread fast about the imminent danger and people, particularly those in the hospitality sector responded with responsibility, thereby conveying the right messages. Masks were in vogue quite early in Bodh Gaya.
Agreeing with the DM, Dr Farasat Hussain, former President of the Indian Sports Medicine Association and Gaya chapter of the IMA, said that though Gaya has been infamous for its filth and mosquitoes, sanitation has improved with regular door collection of Municipal waste and other services. Relatively better hygiene has been an advantage. Power supply too has been nearly uninterrupted thereby making the quality of life somewhat better, said Dr Hussain.
Business leader DK Jain attributed it to the positivity of the people and their law abiding nature. Lockdown was more effectively implemented in Gaya as compared to other places and for that people as well as the administrative machinery is to be applauded. But there is no room for lowering the guard, said Jain, a former President of the Central Bihar chamber of Commerce.
Large scale quarantisation, hot pursuit of the international travellers and their profiling too kept Gaya in good stead, says activist Lalji Prasad. Prasad, a member of the district level Peace committee said that more people have been quarantined (home as well as institutional quarantine) in Gaya than any other place in the state. More than 15000 persons have been so far quarantined in the district, three fourth of them under institutional quarantine, Prasad added.
The ultimate outcome will depend on our ability to deal with the influx of migrant workers and others stranded elsewhere in the country, said Mahesh Guput, a leading Gayawal Panda. The migrants workers coming from other places should be quarantined away from the population and in no case they should be quarantined in the Municipal Corporation area, said the Panda leader.
For the more statistically inclined, 1055 samples have so far been collected in the district. 885 reports are available and only six persons have so far tested positive. None of the patients needed ICU ventilator support.
