Lessons in lockdown & Covid-19 test for violators in Wanaparthy

Police counsel a group of violators
HYDERABAD: Be ready to sit for an impromptu written test on the ill-effects of Covid-19 if you step out for a joyride amid the lockdown in Telangana’s Wanaparthy town. Police officials will conduct the test by the roadside and you will not be allowed to go home until you get all answers right.
Police officials told TOI that they have been conducting the test for everyone, from students to the not-soyoung, as a way of discouraging people from stepping out of their homes without a reason.
Before taking to this strategy, the police would counsel lockdown violators – “give them gyan” - on the dangers of not following lockdown rules, not maintaining social distancing or not putting on a mask before stepping out of homes. When this was not enough, they decided to find out if the gyan had been imbibed or not.
After being made to listen to a lecture from cops, the violators have to answer questions on how to wash hands and why social distancing is important. The violators also have to read articles on Covid-19, its seriousness and preventive measures that are to be taken.
“It is not just about reading but also sitting for a test and passing the test is must,” a cop said. The violators are allowed to go only after they take a pledge that they will not violate lockdown guidelines.
Violators told to read articles
As if having to suffer the lathi blow for violating lockdown wasn’t enough, now police are making us read articles, listen to lectures and take an examination on Covid-19,” a violator complained.
In Vijayawada in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, traffic policemen are making the violators write 500 times on a piece of paper that they would not violate the rules.
