Haryana: Shahabad sugar mill clears stock, stops operations

KURUKSHETRA: After clearing around 36,000 quintals of sugarcane in its stock, Shahabad Cooperative Sugar Mill stopped operations on Saturday morning, its managing director Sushil Kumar said.
A 52-year-old man of Shahabad Sugar Mill Colony, who worked as manufacturing chemist at the mill tested positive for Covid-19 at PGIMER, Chandigarh on Friday, following which the district administration declared the residential colony a containment zone and the mill campus a buffer zone.
After this, the sugar mill had to stop its operations after clearing available sugar ingredients in stock. The Kurukshetra health department demarcated containment and buffer zones in Shahabad sugar mill and started sanitising the area besides taking samples of those mill workers who came in contact with the Covid-19 patient.
Kurukshetra civil surgeon Dr Sukhbir Singh said, “On Saturday, we collected samples of 42 mill workers, who came in contact with the patient, for Covid-19 testing. On Friday, we collected 16 samples of his contacts including six family members. Reports of all contacts are awaited.”
