Kalyan: Muslims help perform funeral of their former Hindu neighbour

Muslim ex-neighbour helps Hindu man conduct last rites of his mother
KALYAN: In a display of communal harmony, Muslim neighbours of a 70-year-old woman from Kalyan helped her sons perform the last rites of the senior citizen.
Prabha Kalwar took ill at 2.30 am on Saturday and her youngest son Mahesh called up his ex-neighbour, Shakir Shaikh, as no one in his current neighbourhood came forward due to the lockdown.
Mahesh and Shakir took Prabha to hospital where she died. Mahesh was left with his eldest brother, who has paralysis, while one was in Nashik and two are abroad.
Shakir then called up their other Muslim neighbours who knew the family. They brought the material required for a Hindu funeral. “Shakir and my other Muslim friends joined me and my brother, who came from Nashik, carry the body for cremation,” said Mahesh.
This is all what Shakir told TOI: “Not just ex-neighbours, we’re like family members.”
