MANGALURU: For head of state police,
Praveen Sood, 'Bald is Beautiful'. He literally does not have to hair-split in leading men under his command for steely resolve under his bald pate gets the work done. But this is not a choice for most men who work alongside and lower down the rungs for they literally must deal with department decorum, which for a thumb rule states that no one lays their hands on even a tuft of hair of a policeman.
With the pandemic driven lockdown putting a break on hair cutting salons, men in uniform, including frontline Covid-19 warriors are either turning to their spouses or children to give them the much-needed snip or indulging in DIY. While the senior rung of state police force is reposing their faith on electric trimmers to work its charm, the lower rung is landing up at the doorsteps of barbers in their respective units for much needed haircut.
Admitting that he for one had not given this issue any thought, Sood in a lighter vein told STOI, “Why would I worry about a haircut?” However, given the fact that the dignity of the uniform prescribes a certain physical appearance code, including a neat haircut and a shave, Sood said, “I am sure men are innovating in this hour of need. While shaving can be handled personally, hair cuts can be a bit tricky for those who are not savvy with trimmers,” he said.
City police chief
PS Harsha said the Mangaluru City Police since the outbreak of the pandemic is not so much insisting on the physical appearance of the 1,000-odd men in various formations in his unit. With men manning the frontlines in this war against
Covid, they have tacitly been told that the odd long hair peeping beneath the caps is okay. Most seniors just use trimmer and ensure general appearance rule is always met; Harsha noted.
Col Firdosh P Dubash, director recruiting, Army recruiting office said practically all military formations have their in-house barbers who ensure that men and officers meet prescribed hair cut norms. Dittoing this, DIG SB Venkatesh, commander,
Coast Guard Karnataka said the unit barber trims his hair. “I have my personal hair trimming kit,” he says. Both these officers say the barbers are following all safety norms that the present circumstances mandate.
