Virus making parents more responsible

THE EDITOR: The closure of schools as a result of the nightmarish covid19 pandemic is presenting meaningful opportunities for parents to interact with their children.

Many parents are finding this to be a rather tedious task as they were unaccustomed to having their young ones them 4 hours a day due to work and to a large extent recreational pursuits.

Against the backdrop of this horrifying virus, there are caring parents who are attempting to maximise their time at home in providing the necessary guidance in relation to studies as well as instilling the much needed religious and morale values.

Such parents are always present at PTA meetings. They must be loudly applauded for their keen involvement in school activities and always being prepared to sacrifice their time and resources for the overall welfare of the school.

On the contrary, however, there are parents whose modus operandi is solely based on receiving rather than giving in small ways. Little do they realise that their children become copycats of this disgusting “gimme gimme” syndrome.

The recent closure of schools has forced delinquent parents to ensure that hot meals are prepared in a timely fashion. Now that many parents are non-essential workers who do not have to report to duty, they are realising the problems encountered by teachers daily.

As monstrous as the pandemic may seem, it is providing golden opportunities for parents to demonstrate true parental responsibility.
