Coronavirus: Tamil Nadu reports 203 more Covid-19 cases

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu reported 203 Covid-19 cases on Friday. Chennai remained a hotspot as the city accounted for 176 of the 203 fresh cases.
A 98-year-old man, who was under treatment in the Government Multi Super Specality Hospital in Chennai, died on Friday taking the death toll in the state to 28.
On Friday, 54 people were discharged from various hospitals. With these, the total number of people discharged is 1,312. However, the number of active cases – the number of people admitted to hospitals with Covid-19 -- in the state has been steadily increasing. From 809 on Monday, it touched 1,035 on Thursday and 1,183 on Friday.
“But that is not a cause for concern. We are screening a lot of people, which is why we are able to pick up a lot of positive cases. We isolate them and ensure infection doesn’t spread,” said health minister C Vijaya Baskar.
The state does 165 samples per million population compared to a national average of 65. “At least 14% of samples tested in India are from TN. We have 46 testing labs across the state. So far, we have tested 1.29 lakh samples for 1.20 lakh people. We are slightly behind a more densely populated Maharashtra, which has screened 1.39 lakh samples,” he said.
