DIBRUGARH: A group of rural women
entrepreneurs from
Dibrugarh district have come together to support the fight against Covid-19 by producing masks on a large-scale.
As many as 163 women from 83 self help groups (SHGs) have started mass production of masks at household level under the
Assam State Rural
Livelihood Mission (ASRLM), Dibrugarh to meet the high demand of masks in the district. Produced under the trademark of ASOMI, the light-blue coloured masks are made of double layer cotton cloth with elastic type band.
The brand name ASOMI is an amalgamation of alphabets namely A= Atmo (Self), SO = Sohayok (Help), M= Mahila Gootor (Women Group), I = Identity (Porichoy). Each mask is priced between Rs 15 to 25 and till Saturday, the group has managed to sell 7,899 masks in the district.
“We have roped in the rural women entrepreneurs from SHGs under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) for the mass production of masks. The production process began from around April 1, a week into the lockdown. Till date, they have managed to sell 7,899 masks and earned an amount of Rs 2,20,050,” said
ASLRM district project manager Monjit Gogoi.
He added, “The double-layered ASOMI mask is also available for public at a counter inside the premises of Dibrugarh deputy commissioner’s office campus. So far, 357 pieces of mask has been sold through the counter. Most of the bulk orders are received from tea gardens and industrial establishments. Presently, the women entrepreneurs are engaged in production of 14,000 masks for a government order.” He further said that district administration has assisted the women entrepreneurs to connect with vendors and get the required materials for preparation of mask.
