Jaroslav Halak, who has proven to be as solid a backup goaltender as any in the NHL over the last two seasons, has signed a one-year contract extension to remain with the Boston Bruins in 2020-21.

General manager Don Sweeney announced the deal on Friday. It is reportedly worth $2.25 million.

The Slovakian netminder was scheduled to became an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. In 31 games in 2019-20, he has an 18-6-6 record with a .239 goals-against average and 9.19 save percentage with three shutouts.

Halak signed with the Bruins as a free agent on July 1, 2018, after leaving the New York Islanders. In two seasons with Boston, he is 40-17-10 with a 2.36 GAA, a .921 save percentage and eight shutouts.

His stellar play has allowed the Bruins to rest No. 1 goalie Tuukka Rask frequently, keeping him fresh for key games. That was important in the Bruins' run to the Stanley Cup final series last year. The two currently lead the league in goals against. Halak turns 35 on May 13.
