FALL RIVER — As COVID-19 has affected most areas of our lives, but especially schools and student activities, the Fall River Chapter of the Prince Henry Society has extended the deadline for applications until June 1.

Students must be of Portuguese descent and be graduating from Atlantis Charter School, Bishop Connolly, B.M.C. Durfee High, Diman, Case, Seekonk, Somerset Berkley, Tiverton, and Westport high schools.

Students who live in Greater Fall River but attend other area schools should contact the New Bedford or Taunton chapters to see if they are eligible for their scholarships. Their applications are different, as are their deadlines.

In addition to being of Portuguese descent, students must write an essay about the influence of their culture, and submit transcripts, financials and letters of recommendations. Applications are accepted from guidance counselors and reviewed by a committee of members. Scholarships will be awarded at a date to be announced.

Students can get applications from their high school guidance counselor, St. Anthony of Padua Credit Union, Rockland Trust in Somerset and Alexandra's Boutique in Fall River.

It is also not too late for community members who want to establish scholarships in their family’s name or in memory of a loved one to do so with a donation of $1,000. The donation would fund a scholarship for one year.

For more information, to receive an application via email, to establish a scholarship or to make a donation, call 508-916-4150, email info@phsfr.org or use the contact form at www.phsfr.org. The site also contains a PayPal link to make donations easier.
