"The districts were earlier designated as hotspots or red zones, orange zones and green zones primarily based on the cumulative cases reported and the doubling rate." Sudan wrote.
"Since the recovery rates have gone up, the districts are now being designated across various zones duly broad-basing the criteria. This classification is multi-factorial and takes into consideration the incidence of cases, double rate, the extent of testing and surveillance feedback to classify the districts." the letter added.
According to the list rolled out by the Union health secretary Preeti Sudan there are a total of 130 red zones, 284 orange zones and 319 green zones. The sign of relief is that the number of red zones have decreased from 170 to 130.
Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of Red and orange zones with 19 and 36 respectively.
She also informed, "It is further highlighted that based on field feedback and additional analysis at State level, states may designate additional red or orange zones as appropriate."
All the metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Pune have been identified as red zones in the new classification.
"A district will be considered under Green Zone if there are no confirmed cases so far or there is no reported case since last 21 days in the district," Sudan said.
Maximum number of districts under red zone are in Uttar Pradesh (19), followed by Maharashtra (14), Tamil Nadu (12), Delhi (11) and West Bengal.
States with maximum of districts in green zones are Assam (30), Arunachal Pradesh (25), Chhattisgarh (25), Madhya Pradesh (24), Odisha (21) and Uttar Pradesh (20).
This classification of districts has to be followed for a week post the nationwide lockdown from 3rd May, and it will be revised on a weekly bases.

For dists having 1 or more municipal corporations, corporations&other areas of dists may be treated as separate units.
