In order to restrict the movement of people and migrants during lockdown, Konkan railway police have taken steps at Mudgeri railway tunnel point so that migrants do not cross the border and head towards their home towns.

DySP Sammy Tavares of Konkan railway police along with PI Sherif Jacques and police staff visited Mudgeri on Goa    border and sealed the site.

When questioned, police officials said there were reports that migrants used various strategies initially to cross the state border and taking cognisance of it, the police team headed by DySP Sammy Tavares of Konkan railway police visited the site and carried out an inspection.

It was decided to post police security round-the-clock in the area. PI Jacques of Konkan railway police, Margao, when contacted, said that constables have been posted round-the-clock there.

Sources in police said that “when the borders were sealed, there was news that many migrants were crossing the borders by walking on the railway tracks.

The attention of the police was completely on the roads. Since all means of transport were shut, we expected that the people would use only the roads to travel either by any vehicle or on foot. But many of them used the railway tracks to walk towards their destinations.”

When questioned as to why the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel did not stop the migrants, sources said that the role of RPF is limited only to the railway stations and platforms and not tracks.
