Nagpur: Door-to-door garbage collection in half of the city stopped on Saturday as around 800 workers from zones 1 to 5 working with AG Enviro went on a flash strike.
The areas affected were Laxmi Nagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Nehru Nagar and Dhantoli zones.
Workers of the company also staged a demonstration at Jaitala and Reshimbagh. On being informed, deputy municipal commissioner Dr Pradip Dasarwar held a meeting with the workers’ representative as well as the representatives of AG Enviro. But it remained inconclusive and work did not resume.
Two firms AG Enviro and BVG India had taken over door-to-door garbage collection from Kanak Resources Management Limited, who were ousted, in November 2019. “AG Enviro realized that it was overstaffed. The company has made a list of around 250 excess employees. Now, the company wants to terminate them. This has led to resentment and hence employees stopped work,” Dr Dasarwar said.
