Deal Or No Deal At $18,800? 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet In Zyclam-Red Pearl Metallic

A lovely 1990 Porsche 944 S2 is currently up for sale from European Automobile Company in Plainview, New York with an $18,800 asking price.

Porsche built the 944 from 1982 to 1991 based around the 924 platform and this particular model is a 1990 S2 Cabriolet with 67,545 miles (108,703 km) under its belt. Equally important for enthusiasts, like all S2s, it has a five-speed manual gearbox. It also comes in a rare Zyclam-Red Pearl Effect metallic which is a deep burgundy color that nicely complements the lines of the car (see a 944 S2 Coupe in the same shade here).

The Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet is a rather interesting thing. As Road & Track notes, each example actually started life as a coupe body shell before each car was transported to an American Speciality Cars factory in Germany where the roof was removed and structural bracing was added. Each Cabriolet was sent back to Porsche where the mechanical and interior parts were installed. The 944 S2 Cabriolet then returned back to American Speciality Cars to be outfitted with its fabric top.

Due to the additional complexity of building the S2 Cabriolet, it cost $6,700 more than a comparative coupe.

The listing states that this car recently underwent an oil and fluid service and that the electronics are all working. Inside, the Linen Grey leather seats appear to be in great condition. The fabric top is also said to be “like new”.

Powering the sports car is a naturally-aspirated 3.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 205hp (208 PS). This was the largest four-cylinder of its time and offered up enough grunt to send the car to 60 mph (96 km/h) in a respectable 6.0 seconds. A total of 5,656 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet models were built from 1989 through 1991, with nearly half of those (2,402 to be precise) sold in the United States.
