PANAJI: Stuck at home during the lockdown, locals seem to have got the munchies as their consumption of biscuits has caused the confectionery item to fly off shelves. General store owners and supermarkets are witnessing a shortage of biscuits, even as distributors blame the supply chain for the situation.
“A biscuit shortage is prevalent in stores across the state. The problem is not just from the distributors end but also from the manufacturer’s. A lot of bakery products are therefore off the shelves, not just certain brand of biscuits,” said director of Magsons, Kirit Maganlal.
Biscuits are some of the prominent items in the fastmoving consumer goods’ category and are found in almost every shopper’s basket. While the manufacturing plants of some companies are non-operational , the transportation curbs have not eased out across the country due to which the supply chain has hit been affected.
At the Goa Bagayatdar on 18 June Road, shoppers had started panic-buying biscuits days before the nationwide lockdown was announced. By the time the country entered its second lockdown stint, the biscuit shelves had already started to look empty.
“Stocks of major brands like Parle and Britannia were the first to get exhausted. Gradually, the other brands also started to run out. Our distributors are saying that there is a shortage so we cannot do anything but wait for the supply to resume,” Nitin Parsekar, the manager at Goa Bagayatdar said.
Small time general stores have also taken a hit. “There are especially a lot of diabetes patients who are asking for sugarless crackers. But we have exhausted all our stocks. Our distributors are asking us to go to Old Goa and collect biscuits but even there, not all brands are available,” Tejus Gosavi, proprietor of Bhikaji provisional general stores said.
