Footage of the video showing an elderly man being punished by the policemen
KANPUR: A video of a police officer scolding and humiliating an old devotee going to pray for violating lockdown norms went viral on social media on Wednesday evening.
The video from Panki area shows an elderly man being forced to sit and crawl to the peepul tree where he was going to do ‘jalabhishek’ on the road while holding the ‘puja thali’.
The man, a devotee of Lord Hanuman was going to a nearby ‘peepul’ tree to offer prayers and for ‘jalabhishek’ on Wednesday morning amid the lockdown.
He was, however, caught by the policeman, who refused to listen to his pleas, and humiliated him.
The cop also picked a utensil containing water and poured it in his ‘thali’.
In the video, the SHO is also seen mocking him by saying “God is testing you”.
Later, in a clarification on its Twitter handle, Kanpur Nagar police said, “The policeman seen in the video is in-charge of Panki police station. As per him, the man apologised for violating lockdown norms and willingly returned to his home.”
The SHO’s act, however, drew sharp criticism on social media platforms.
SSP/DIG Anant Deo said that SHO Panki Vinod Kumar Singh has been sent to lines. “A probe has been ordered in this regard,” he added.
