PATIALA: The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) has sought a financial package of Rs 10,000 for the families of the labourers who have been left workless during the lockdown prompted by the spread of the coronavirus in the state.
Chandreshwar Singh Mohi, the state spokesperson for PPCC and former legislator Dr Satwant Singh Mohi, a former MLA, said the union government should grant a special financial package for thousands of labourers, who contributes 54% to the national economy, constituting more than 94% of the national workforce but have been left without any source of livelihood during the lockdown.
They said, it was important to protect the interest of the working class as they had no other means to support their families but were dependent on any financial add that can be provided by the union government.
They said, the call given by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi to support the working class and landless labourers will go a long way in this hour of Covid-19 pandemic. They said, the union government has so far failed to address the hardships being faced by the working class and has not responded to the seriousness of the situation.
Chandreshwar Singh said the sections of society that were not covered under the public distribution systems (PDS) should also be extended free ration in this hour of need.
