Former Proteas batsman Herschelle Gibbs will put the bat he used in the famous '438' ODI up for auction to raise funds for Covid-19.

Gibbs scored 175 off 111 balls to help South Africa chase down a mammoth 435-run target set by Australia in a one-day international at the Wanderers on 12 March 2006.

Mark Boucher's four off the penultimate ball took South Africa's total to 438 and gave them a one-wicket win. It was a then record for the most runs scored in an ODI.

Cricket, as all sport, is currently suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic and Gibbs took to Twitter on Friday to indicate his desire to help those in need.

"Supersport showing the #438 game . The bat i used  that day will be up for auction to raise funds for covid. Kept it all these years," he wrote.

South Africa's famous victory also saw them claim the ODI series 3-2 against a shell-shocked Australia.
