Rishi Kapoor passed away today, leaving an irreplaceable void. The actor had led a tough battle against leukemia since the past two years and had also undergone treatment at a hospital in US. While he returned to India last year, the actor unfortunately couldn’t follow his passion for films. From 11 months in US to returning to film sets in India – here’s a timeline of Rishi Kapoor’s battle against cancer.
An avid social media user, on September 29 Rishi Kapoor tweeted that he is leaving for the US for medical treatment. However he did not reveal what he had been diagnosed with. Rishi Kapoor shared, “Hello, all! I am taking a short leave of absence from work to go to America for some medical treatment. I urge my well-wishers not to worry or unnecessarily speculate. It’s been 45 years “plus” of wear and tear at the movies. With your love and good wishes, I will be back soon!"
While in US, the veteran actor was often visited by his family and close friends of the industry. From Shah Rukh Khan to Deepika Padukone and Abhishek-Aishwarya – a whole lot of B-town met the ailing actor. While Ranbir Kapoor was constantly shuttling between India and US to be with his parents, his lady love Alia Bhatt often accompanied them.
From celebrating Rishi Kapoor’s birthday in New York to ringing in the New Year with family – the Kapoor’s were closely huddled for all happy times. Alia Bhatt had joined Ranbir, Rishi, Neetu and Riddhima for New Year celebrations in US and their pictures made one happy family moment.
Speaking about his battle with the Big C in an interview with Mumbai Mirror in July 2019, Rishi Kapoor had stated, "I can now reassure everyone that the cancer is in remission, I just need a few more weeks before I return home. Once in a year or a year and -a-half I have to come back for check-ups." In May filmmaker Rahul Rawail had stated that the veteran actor was cancer-free.
After undergoing treatment for nearly a year, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh were snapped at the airport last year, returning to India. The actor had also shared on Twitter on September 10, 2019, “BACK HOME!!!!!! 11 Months 11days! Thank you all!”.
In February Rishi Kapoor returned to films and was shooting for ‘Sharmaji Namkeen’ in Delhi. He fell ill then and was shifted to a hospital in Mumbai. On February 4, Rishi Kapoor had addressed rumours of his cancer relapse and shared on Twitter, “I have been overwhelmed by all your concern about my health.Thank you. I have been filming in Delhi past 18 days and because of the Pollution and my low count of neutrophils, I caught an infection whereby I had to be hospitalized. I was running a slight fever and on investigation,Dr.s found a patch which could have lead to pneumonia, was detected and is being cured. People seem to have assumed a lot different. I put to rest all those stories and look forward to entertain and love you.”
Rishi Kapoor was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on April 29. After a prolonged battle with cancer, the actor passed away at the age of 67. Ranbir and Neetu Kapoor were by his side at the hospital, which his daughter Riddhima took special travel permission to attend the funeral and arrive from Delhi.
