Pinarayi Vijayan
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The cabinet decided to cancel the plan for delimiting the local bodies ahead of the elections which is likely to be held in October.
An ordinance stalling the delimitation process will be promulgated soon. The necessary amendments will be made to the Kerala Panchayati Raj Act and Kerala Municipality Act.
"Due to the present circumstances the delimitation process will be delayed. That would affect the election schedule. We are cancelling the delimitation process so that the polls are not delayed," said chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan after Wednesday’s cabinet meeting.
Earlier the state government had decided to increase one seat each in the corporations, municipalities and panchayats. For this delimitation of the local bodies had to be done. However, with Covid-19 delaying the delimitation process, the government has now decided to go for the election with the existing number of wards.
