Karnataka: Hearing-impaired couple sends video plea

Deepak Gabbura and Basavva have been stuck in Bommasandra
BENGALURU: A pregnant woman and her husband, who are speech and hearing-impaired and are stranded in Bengaluru, have recorded their plight on video, pleading in sign language that they be taken to their village Lakamapura in Dharwad district.
Deepak Gabbura and his wife Basavva, who is seven months pregnant, are cooped up at their Bommasandra residence owing to the lockdown and have no assistance. He’s a trainer at Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, an NGO.
Keen on going home where they hope their suffering could be mitigated, the couple, however, is finding it difficult to communicate with police in sign language. They have now made the 27-second video where Deepak is seen requesting the authorities through gestures to help them get back.
Deepak married Basavva in May last year. Suresh Gabbura, Deepak’s father, says in another video, “They are stranded and don’t know how to return. I request the chief minister, home minister and deputy commissioner to help us. If they allow us, we will bring them here or they can help the couple travel.”
Suresh released the couple’s video to media in Dharwad. “We requested Dharwad district administration to issue a pass but they declined as Hongasandra had already been sealed. We had no other option but to approach you (media) to get the pass,” he told TOI.
Deepak, who communicated with TOI in sign language with the help of an expert, said he visited the jurisdictional police station several times but to no avail.
NGO in touch with police for pass
As the issue came to the notice of the chief minister’s office, BBMP officials were directed to take the necessary measures. A spokesperson from Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled said they are in touch with police to get a pass to ensure safe travel for the couple on Thursday.
