MUZAFFARNAGAR: Aching to get married and bring home the bride, a 26-year-old man in UP’s Muzaffarnagar hired an ambulance, put his elderly father on drip and travelled all the way to Delhi, hoodwinking policemen at several check posts. Ahmad came back undetected with an edgy wife aboard the ambulance, and shaky father on stretcher on Tuesday.
But the celebrations at home didn’t last very long as someone in the neighbourhood spilled the beans by informing police in Muzaffarnagar’s Khatauli, which is a hotspot with at least five Covid-19 cases. On getting the
information, a police team with health department staff went to the home in Islam Nagar locality and took samples of all the family members, including the groom and the bride. All of them were quarantined for 14 days.
Station house officer (SHO) of Khatauli, Santosh Tyagi, said, “The entire family in Islam Nagar has been put into quarantine.”
According to sources, Ahmad had tried to reach Delhi about four days ago. He, along with his father, Israr, had tried to sneak out of Muzaffarnagar from Upper Ganga Canal road, but police turned them back.
They hired the ambulance then. To avoid detection, Ahmad’s father was administered a drip, a police officer said.
They went to Delhi, solemnized the ‘nikah’ and brought the bride in the ambulance. The driver of the emergency vehicle, Mehtab, was booked under section 188 of IPC (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), the SHO said.
